ANZ Smart Choice Super: March 2024

Published on 10 May 2024

Our 1960s to 2000s ANZ Smart Choice Super Lifestage investment options, where the majority of our members are invested, have provided those members with over 13% returns for the year to 31 March 2024.  These solid returns were supported by a rally in the share markets.

The Lifestage options with higher weightings to growth assets - those designed for younger members - delivered competitive returns with the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s investment options, producing returns ranging from 13.06% to 13.82% for the year to 31 March 2024 while the options with more defensive assets, such as the 1940s and 1950s investment options, also produced healthy positive returns of 8.99% and 10.71% respectively for the year to 31 March 2024.

Sharemarket performance

The US sharemarket (S&P 500) continued to post new highs in the past quarter with strong contributions from the Magnificent Seven (large cap stocks focused on AI, cloud computing, cutting-edge hardware and software).

The Australian sharemarket (ASX 300) delivered 14.40% over the past 12 months, while the global sharemarket returned 25.03% (hedged to the Australian dollar) and 28.72% (unhedged to the Australia dollar).

ANZ Smart Choice Super Lifestage investment options’ performance

ANZ Smart Choice Super Lifestage investment options structure their asset allocation—the balance between higher-return, higher-risk assets and more conservative choices—based on members’ age.

This is designed to reduce investment risk as a member gets closer to retirement. It also ensures they get the inflation-beating benefits of holding sufficient higher-returning growth assets both on the way to and in retirement.

Based on your decade of birth, the table below shows how your investment option performed over the past quarter as well as over one, three and five-year periods to end 31 March 2024.
