ANZ Smart Choice Super: March 2025

Published on 07 May 2025

Solid longer-term performance for ANZ Smart Choice Super Lifestage members

Members in our Lifestage options have seen solid performance over the longer-term. Our 1960s-2000s options, all returned over 8% p.a. for the five years to 31 March 2025, reflecting the Lifestage options’ strategic focus on long-term value creation.

All Lifestage options also delivered another positive return over the one-year to 31 March 2025.

This performance has primarily been driven by the portfolio’s strategic exposure to listed global and Australian shares. Global share market returns have been strong over the past two years driven by investor appetite for US technology stocks, especially the Magnificent Seven (Apple, Microsoft, Google’s parent Alphabet, Amazon, Nvidia, Meta Platforms, and Tesla).

Exposure to these asset classes has contributed to the overall growth of the ANZ Smart Choice Super Lifestage portfolio, with exposure to global share markets providing the potential for significant capital appreciation over the long-term.

Based on your decade of birth, the table below shows how your investment option performed over the 1, 3 and 5-year periods to end 31 March 2025.

Note: Please note that all returns are calculated after the deduction of investment fees and tax, but do not include account-based fees such as administration fees. Performance returns are annualised for periods greater than one year (p.a. = per annum).  Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance.

Steve Gamerov, Head of Diversified Portfolio Management for OnePath Custodians Pty Limited noted: “The ANZ Smart Choice Super Lifestage portfolio has seized growth opportunities in global share markets, while mitigating market volatility through a diversified mix of high-quality unlisted and alternative assets (investments that are not traded on traditional share markets).

However, the recent rollout of President Trump’s new trade policy has rattled share markets. The United States’ imposition of tariffs – a tax on imports – has triggered higher market volatility and increased concerns that the US economy might be headed towards recession.

In these environments we believe that being agile, selective and opportunistic is important in navigating the volatility that is likely in markets in the coming months.

Diversification remains a cornerstone of our investment philosophy. By spreading investments across various asset classes, we aim to reduce risk and enhance returns. This approach not only helps in navigating market volatility but also leads to stronger long-term performance.

Our disciplined investment process – supported by rigorous governance and an active approach to portfolio management – ensures we navigate market complexities with prudence, helping to deliver long-term value for our members.”

The ANZ Smart Choice Super Lifestage investment options are regularly reviewed to ensure they remain well-positioned amid evolving market conditions.

The Lifestage options are broadly diversified, with investments spread across a balanced mix of growth, defensive, and alternative asset classes. This includes unlisted assets like property, infrastructure, and private credit. These alternative and unlisted investments offer strong diversification benefits, often delivering steady, long-term cash flows that tend to be less affected by market and economic fluctuations.

Additionally, the asset mix within each Lifestage option automatically shifts to a more conservative allocation as members approach retirement. This gradual transition is designed to help safeguard members’ capital and smooth out investment returns during the later stages of their working life.
